The Weinstein Company has released the first trailer for About Ray (formerly Three Generations). Elle Fanning stars as Ray, New York City teenager embarking on the process of transitioning from female to male.
Naomi Watts plays Ray’s mother Maggie, who accepts his decision but nevertheless worries about her child, and Susan Sarandon plays Ray’s grandmother Dolly, who just doesn’t seem to get it (“Why can’t she just be a lesbian?” she asks). Tate Donovan also stars as Ray’s absentee father, who’s reluctant to sign off on Ray’s medical forms. Watch the About Ray trailer after the jump.
About Ray opens September 18, 2015. [Source]
Written by Amy-Jo Albany from her 2003 memoir, director Jeff Preiss’ Low Down chronicles the adolescent years of Amy-Jo (Elle Fanning) in 1970s Los Angeles, spent between living with her jazz pianist/heroin addict father, Joe Albany (John Hawkes), and the only stable person in her life, her grandmother (Glenn Close). Ignoring the prosaic plot and formulaic structure of most biopics, the film recounts her story in a vulnerable and poetic manner. The cast of veteran actors and musicians gives strong, nuanced performances. Filmed on Super 16 millimeter in grainy atmospheric earth tones, the film precisely captures the mid-’70s era it depicts. Like the accompanying music, Preiss’ movie strays from and returns to the topic. Viewers shouldn’t rely on a linear plot, but allow the film’s sights and sounds to feel as improvisational as the music and as raw as Amy-Jo’s memories.
Showing at the UW-Milwaukee Union Theatre, February 20-22.
15-year-old Elle Fanning stars in Likeness, directed by cinematographer Rodrigro Prieto (Wolf of Wall Street,) a film about the maddening horrors of eating disorders.
Prieto conceived the film with the help of his daughter Ximena, who has struggled with eating disorders and body image. Elle begins the film by navigating through a mine-field (mindfield is more like it) of stick-thin models at a party, representing the images and messages that young girls are bombarded with every day. When she gets to the bathroom, she sees herself in a distorted way, which makes her go to the toilet to throw up. It can be triggering for those with eating disorders, but it may also make you see your world in a different way.
For Prieto and his daughter making this film was healing for them. “This was an important healing device for us, and hopefully a way to help other kids say, ‘I feel like that. I understand that,’” Prieto says. “It’s about being in a society where we feel judged, and are judging ourselves.” [Source]
