British filmmaker Sally Potter’s new film about the inseparable friendship between two teenage girls set in Cold War-era London has gained praise as a return to cinematic form for Potter and a powerful acting turn by American teen Elle Fanning.

Fanning, the rising star and younger sister of Dakota Fanning, auditioned for the role at the age of 12 and adopts an accomplished British accent to play politically aware Londoner Ginger in “Ginger & Rosa,” which screened Monday at the New York Film Festival.

“Orlando” filmmaker Potter, 63, told a news conference that while the film features various U.S. actors including Annette Bening and Oliver Platt, she did not set out to cast Americans Fanning and Alessandro Nivola in the central roles of Ginger and her charming, pacifist father.

She was searching for an unknown young English actress and scanned more than 2,000 such leads before coming across Fanning, who started acting just before age 3 and who recently caught attention in “Super 8” and other films.

A giggling Fanning told reporters her blonde hair was dyed red, befitting the name of her nuclear bomb-protesting and poet title character, for the film that explores adolescence, family discord and political and moral contradictions.

Independent British distributors Artificial Eye will bring to Blu-ray acclaimed director Sally Potter’s latest film Ginger & Rosa (2012), starring Christina Hendricks, Elle Fanning and Annette Bening. The preliminary release date set by the distributors is February 11th.

Ginger & Rosa, which is playing at this year’s London Film Festival, will be out in UK cinemas on 19th October.

Sally Potter directs this drama about two teenage girls living in London in the early 1960s. Elle Fanning and Alice Englert star as Ginger and Rosa, best friends who were both born on the day the first atom bomb fell on Hiroshima. The two are inseparable until Rosa falls in love with Ginger’s charismatic father Roland (Alessandro Nivola). Ginger, shattered and alone, becomes increasingly immersed in the anti-nuclear movement, the looming horrors of the Cold War and the Cuban Missile Crisis resonating with her own personal nightmare. The new film “Ginger and Rosa” by English filmmaker Sally Potter screened Friday night at the Telluride Film Festival high in the mountains of Colorado. A tale drawn in no small part from Potter’s own life, the movie follows two young girls through a coming-of-age story set against the early ’60s backdrop of nuclear disarmament protests and the Cuban missile crisis. With stirring performances by relative veteran Elle Fanning and newcomer Alice Englert, the film is on the fall festival circuit in search of U.S. distribution.

Their mothers met in the hospital during childbirth, and Ginger (Fanning) and Rosa (Englert) have grown up together. Now teenagers on the cusp of maturity, the two become part of the emerging anti-nuclear protest movement. The relationship between Ginger’s parents (Christina Hendricks and Allesandro Nivola) is strained, with her father’s staunch activism at odds with the demands of home life even as a trio of family friends (Annette Bening, Oliver Platt and Timothy Spall) encourage Rosa’s own interest in the protest movement. When Ginger’s father begins an affair with Rosa, all their worlds crumble.
