Elle Fanning, who just arrived in Cannes for the debut of her latest film, Sofia Coppola’s The Beguiled, has described herself as “a unicorn flower child at heart, mixed with a schoolboy and the occasional Cali surfer dude.” That has translated to some whimsical, fashion-forward red carpet looks, including the Vivienne Westwood gown she wore for tonight’s opening ceremony of the Cannes Film Festival. It’s the first look that actually features Fanning’s favorite mystical creature: If you look closely, you’ll see a unicorn hand-painted on the train in candy pink. In fact, the unicorn was Fanning’s idea—she worked with Westwood and Andreas Kronthaler on the custom gown, which is a modern reinterpretation of Westwood’s iconic Bird of Paradise dresses from Spring ’05. Here, she gave Vogue an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the making of the gown and the story behind it.

In The Beguiled, Fanning’s wardrobe consists of 19th-century American staples like Victorian lace dresses and ruffled blouses. But Westwood’s gown takes her a little further back in fashion history: It was originally inspired by 17th- and 18th-century salon culture, particularly the corsets, bustles, and exaggerated silhouettes women favored at that time. Fanning’s strapless, corseted gown comes in “snowdrop white” draped and bustled duchesse satin with a hand-painted design that was loosely inspired by Frans Hals’s 1624 painting The Laughing Cavalier. The artwork depicts a young man in an extravagant silk costume embroidered with bees, arrows, lover’s knots, and tongues of fire, which were meant to symbolize “the pleasures and pains of love.” Westwood’s symbols celebrate femininity and Fanning’s personality: There’s a shooting star named Elle; the planet Gaia, Westwood’s signature orb; and, of course, the requested unicorn, all in pretty shades of pink.

Two orphans with a dream give it their all in the latest trailer for The Weinstein Company’s upcoming animated film Leap!

Directed by Éric Summer and Éric Warin and written by Carol Noble, Eric Summer and Laurent Zeitoun, Leap! follows 11-year-old orphan Félicie (Elle Fanning), who dreams of becoming a dancer in Paris, and her best friend Victor (Nat Wolff), an imaginative, but exhausting boy with a passion for creating has a dream of his own, to become a famous inventor.

Life’s greatest adventure begins with a single leap, and the two friends leave their orphanage in pursuit of their passions. But – there’s a catch, Félicie must pretend to be the child of a wealthy family in order to gain admittance to the prestigious and competitive Opera Ballet School in Paris. The animated flick also co-stars Maddie Ziegler, Mel Brooks and Carly Rae Jepson.

IN IMDB YEARS, ELLE FANNING SHOULD BE APPROACHING her mid forties. She’s taken on 55different roles (with a further seven films coming) since her first acting gig, aged two, in I Am Sam, alongside her older sister, actress Dakota. Of course, in reality, 18-year-old Elle’s long résumé has created a teen with a depth of experience and wisdom.

As Harper Lee wrote, ‘You never really understand a person… until you climb into [her] skin and walk around in it.’ And through her work, Elle has done just that. She played a transgender boy in About Ray, a Disney princess in Maleficent, a politically awakened teen in Trumbo, a lonesome 11 year old in Somewhere, a narcissistic supermodel in The Neon Demon, and a young feminist in this month’s 20th Century Women.

‘When you get these parts, the women become a part of you,’ she tells me over breakfast in her home city of Los Angeles. ‘I was acting while growing up myself, so I’d feel older after each character.’ Who better then to solve some of our life dilemmas?

We asked readers to submit their questions, and it turns out that Elle was born to be an agony aunt. ‘Friends come to me for advice,’ she says. ‘I say it how it is. They know I’ll be honest with them. There’s none of that post-truth stuff with me.’

Elle is, perhaps, the teenager we all wish we’d been: she’s kind (even to grumpy waiters) and looks entirely together at 8.30am in a black cashmere polo, midi skirt and Dr. Martens. She’s the epitome of cool and has Solange’s number in her mobile to prove it – the pair recently met, by chance, in a cafe in New Orleans, and Knowles insisted they hang. But it’s Elle’s spirit that’s most enviable. She throws herself into everything she does with assurance, drive and unadulterated joy, even when that’s plunging into a pool, mid-winter, for our cover shoot.

The Gaby Dellal-helmed film, which also stars Naomi Watts and Susan Sarandon, has sat in limbo since September 2015.

Nearly 18 months after abruptly pulling Three Generations from its release schedule, The Weinstein Co. has put the Elle Fanning-led transgender drama back on the calendar.

TWC will release the Gaby Dellal-helmed film, which also stars Naomi Watts and Susan Sarandon, on May 19, where it will open against such wide releases as Alien: Covenant, Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul and Everything, Everything.

In September 2015, TWC pulled the film, then titled About Ray, from its schedule just days before it was set to open in select theaters. The move raised eyebrows given that the company had aggressively pursued the film and bought it for $6 million at the Cannes market in May 2015.

About Ray was scheduled to begin rolling out Sept. 18, 2015, following its bow at the Toronto Film Festival, but Harvey Weinstein’s company decided to shift course. At the time, TWC sources said the film would be bumped to later that year for an Oscar-qualifying run. But that never materialized, leaving the film in limbo.

About Ray centers on a New York teenager (Fanning) who decides to transition from female to male, and how she copes with the reaction of her mother (Watts) and gay grandmother (Sarandon).

Big Beach’s Marc Turtletaub and Peter Saraf produced alongside Dorothy Berwin and Watts.

CAA and ICM repped the Cannes sale and have been working to get the film its contractually obligated theatrical release over the past year and a half. [Source]
